“Maker” the word according to Merriam-Webster means, “one who makes” and according to Urban Dictionary, “those who love to create things in their spare time.”

CUSTER TOWNSHIP — Norm Letsinger never really considered himself an artist. He found an old lathe when he was young and took up woodturning. But, whether he likes to admit it or not, he truly is an artist. He has a simple philosophy about woodturning: “Wood has the right to be what it is. I do not have the right to make just anything I want.” He says he does not throw away any wood but rather shapes the wood based on that particular piece’s character.

He mostly makes items to share with friends and family or to donate to organizations to help them raise funds.

“I just enjoy finding the beauty that God put into a piece of wood.”

Mason County Press is looking around the local areas to find those who consider themselves Makers. Whether they make things for a living or as a hobby, we will uncover many who have a passion for creating things with their hands and sharing those items with the world.
