“Maker” the word according to Merriam-Webster means, “one who makes” and according to Urban Dictionary, “those who love to create things in their spare time.”

LUDINGTON — Mary Case is a second-generation art teacher. She studied fine art and took an interest in painting. Mary finds it difficult to pick one art form and enjoys trying new mediums. Her painting style is reflected in the glaze work on her pottery and the illustrations in her children’s books.

Mary turned her passion for art into a business at the corner of Dowland and Delia streets. She purchased a restaurant property built in the late 1800s and renovated it for a gallery and studio space by adding french doors and bigger windows increasing the natural light. The studio space, which extends outside in warmer months, is used to teach a variety of classes from painting to pottery. Mary provides instruction in techniques and gives examples of possible projects. Students are encouraged to create freely.

Mary continues to make changes to her studio space to better accommodate her students. She received grant funding from the 2019 Momentum competition to renovate her bathroom to ADA standards. In addition to the bathroom, Mary has a ramp entrance at the north end of her building with a barrier-free route to the studio and gallery. She also has a variety of chair and table heights available. Art By Mary Case is located at 329 East Dowland Street in Ludington. Visit artbymarycase.com for more information about Mary, the gallery, and classes.

Mason County Press is looking around the local areas to find those who consider themselves Makers. Whether they make things for a living or as a hobby, we will uncover many who have a passion for creating things with their hands and sharing those items with the world.
