LUDINGTON — The Ludington Area School District Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Thursday, March 21 at 7 a.m. to take action on the purchase of 2,400 new Apple iPads. The board was scheduled to take action during its regular meeting on Monday, March 18, however the vote needed to be postponed due to the board not having the appropriate information about the bidding process.
The district is required to seek competitive bids for the purchase of the devices. It received responses from three companies, Apple, Inc., Best Buy Education, and Office Depot. Each of the vendors confirmed that they, along with all other authorized Apple resellers, are prohibited from selling Apple products to private or public educational institutions, according to Superintendent Jason Kennedy. Apple K-12 Education is the sole source provider of the products, Kennedy said.
If the district were to order the products prior to March 22, the iPads will cost $869,950. If the board were to wait until its April regular meeting, it would cost $911,959, a $42,000 savings. The iPads are paid for through the school’s technology bond.
The board will meet in the district’s administrative office, 809 E. Tinkham Ave.
