Ludington council expected to establish marijuana committee.

LUDINGTON — Ludington city council is expected to create an ordinance that establishes an ad hoc recreational marijuana committee when it meets tonight in regular session. The committee will consist of the mayor, members of the city council, a representative of the city planning commission and registered voters of the city, ages 21 or over, appointed by the mayor with approval of city council.

The committee will be charged with investigating and reviewing all aspects of the potential impact of the new state recreational law (known as MCL 333.27951) on the city, including potential for economic development, impacts on public safety and public health and other issues related to recreational marijuana. The committee is expected to identify both potential positive and negative impacts.

The committee may hold public hearings but will have no authority. All meetings will be open to the public, in accordance to the Michigan Open Meetings Act.

It will have no more than six months after its first meeting to develop and present to the city council a written report of its findings and recommendations, if any. It will then disband.

City council meets at 6:30 p.m. at the municipal building, 400 S. Harrison St.
