LUDINGTON — Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association Executive Director Peter Manting is reporting that 502 custom walkway boards have been purchased since SPLKA made them available in July of 2014. The boards are making up the new walkway around Big Sable Lighthouse.

“When we first announced this fund raising intuitive many people asked me how many boards would you like to see sold,” Manting said. “I told them 500 would be good number. Now that we have sold 500 and have them laid out I would say we still have room for another 500. The walkways have been a wonderful addition to the exterior of grounds at Big Sable. All summer long people are coming out to find ‘their’ board.”

Proceeds from the walkway boards have helped fund the new red roof on the keepers quarters at Big Sable, porthole restoration at the Ludington North Breakwater light and are now helping fund the restoration of over 40 interior and exterior doors at Big Sable, Manting said.

“We as an organization want to thank everyone who has already purchased a board and I want to challenge the community to help us reach our new goal of 1000 custom places walkway boards at Big Sable.”

Boards are available for purchase at $100 each. Each board will be engraved with up to 25 characters per line, including commas and spaces with a two line maximum. All boards ordered now and through March will be placed out at Big Sable before it for the season next May.

Forms are found on line at www.splka.org under the tab Leave A Print in the Sand, can be picked up at the SPLKA office at 905 E. Ludington Ave. or can be ordered by calling the SPLKA office at 231-845-7417. Reserve your place in history by purchasing a board in memory of a loved one or with your families’ name for future lighthouse visitors to see.
