MSU Extension to host ballot proposal forums.

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — Michigan residents who would like to learn more about the three statewide ballot proposals appearing on the General Election ballot in November are encouraged to attend Michigan State University Extension’s statewide ballot proposal forums on Oct. 22 or 23 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Participants can attend the forums in person, at one of 10 satellite locations or online via Facebook Live or webinar. A link to both will be available on the MSU Extension website at https://www.canr.msu.edu/vote2018. The forums hosting the expert panel will be held on the Michigan State campus both days in Room 117, Berkey Hall, 509 East Circle Drive, East Lansing.

MSU Extension will host a ballot proposal forum site at the West Shore Community College Administration and Conference Building, MBT Room, 3000 N. Stiles Road, Scottville, MI 49454 on Oct. 22. There is no cost to attend in person, at one of the satellite locations or via streaming video.

The three ballot proposals under discussion cover recreational marijuana use, the formation of an independent legislative redistricting commission and revisions to state voting laws. The ballot proposal forums will feature a presentation from an expert on each ballot proposal followed by a question-and-answer period.

MSU Extension’s forums are not intended to convince anyone to take a specific position on the ballot proposals, but instead are designed to provide unbiased information for anyone hoping to learn more about the issues and decide their own positions. Along with the live forums, MSU Extension will release a white paper dedicated to each of the statewide ballot initiatives.

The forums and white papers will cover:

  • What “YES” and “NO” votes mean.
  • The potential effects of each ballot questions’ passage.
  • Comparisons of Michigan to other states that have adopted similar proposals.
  • The latest research that touches on some of the key questions potential voters might have about the ballot proposals.

The white papers can be found at https://www.canr.msu.edu/vote2018.

The event is open to the public, with MSU Extension staff on hand at the satellite locations to host attendees and facilitate the submission of questions for the expert panelists to address.
