Construction worker from Pentwater dies after being struck by car; Ludington man critical.

BEAR LAKE (Manistee County) — A 20-year-old male construction worker from Pentwater has died and his co-worker, a 23-year-old man from Ludington was seriously injured after vehicle struck them while they were working on US 31 today.

Manistee County Sheriff John O’Hagan said the crash occurred about 3:28 p.m. when a 2013 Ford Taurus driven by a 66-year-old Bear Lake woman crossed the road’s centerline, left the roadway and struck the two workers, who were standing in a construction zone. O’Hagan said speed is believed to be a contributing factor, however alcohol was not.

The Ludington man was taken to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City by helicopter. O’Hagan said the man sustained life threatening injuries and is currently listed in critical condition.

Names of the victims will be released pending notification of the victims’ family members.

The case remains under investigation. No other information is available at this time.

Responding to the scene were Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, Bear Lake Fire Department, Northflight-AeroMed EMS, the Victim Services Unit.
