Scottville considering refuse container rentals instead of bag purchases.

SCOTTVILLE — City residents may soon have the option to rent a refuse container from the city’s waste hauler rather than buying city garbage bags. City Commission is going to consider a proposal from Republic Waste that will allow residents to rent a container for $17 a month when it meets in regular session Monday, July 2 at 5:30 p.m. City Manager Amy Williams said residents who rent the container will not need to buy city bags (but refuse will still need to be bagged). Residents will still have the option to buy bags and place them on the curb, however.

“Advantages to this cart are: the trash is contained in a animal/weather proof container, there is a reduction in blowing debris and also improves the aesthetic appeal, allows for odd shape items that do not fit in city bags, reduces contamination of the recycling carts as people can dispose of items without placing in city bags to try to reduce costs,” Williams said.

The city’s ordinance committee is also considering requiring multi-unit rentals with four or less units to rent the containers.

The $17 per month rental fee would be placed on residents’ water/sewer bills but the funds would be placed in the city’s refuse account. Williams said several other municipalities offer the option and bill the same way, which reduces the cost of having to send out additional billings.

The commission meets at city hall, 105 N. Main St.
