WSCC honors society inducts 45 new members.

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College’s Alpha Phi Phi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honors Society welcomed 45 new members during its annual induction ceremony last week, in the college’s Administrative & Conference Center. Twenty-five students participated in the ceremony.

The program included remarks by chapter Vice President of Leadership Abby Poirier and Scott Ward, president of the college.

Ward challenged the students to practice PTK values stating, “Whatever you do or wherever you go, know that your membership in PTK indicates you have the ability to do great things and to be great leaders, and that can be as simple as volunteering for a local charity, helping others as a tutor, or inspiring co-workers with your passion and drive.”

Poirier encouraged her fellow honor students to continue contributing to the college community saying, “Many of us will be graduating, but we leave behind a strong society of leaders and dedicated students who are reaching out to our fellow students. At a stage in our lives where we are committed to learning, both who we are and what our place is in the world, Phi Theta Kappa is committed to the college and more importantly to the student body, striving to make our little college a beautiful place.”

PTK recognizes and encourages scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, PTK provides opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, fellowship among scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.

Members have opportunities to receive some of more than $37 million in scholarships provided exclusively for PTK members. Members in the United States are also eligible to participate in the All-USA Academic Team program, co-sponsored by USA Today, and by extension their own state-wide academic teams. Members also receive automatic nominations to the National Dean’s List and job postings exclusively for Phi Theta Kappans.

More than two million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually.

WSCC launched a PTK chapter in 1992, and through chapter and individual projects, members continue to serve the college and community.
