SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP — A 24-year-old woman was injured while attempting to extinguish a woods fire at her home Monday afternoon. Six fire departments were eventually dispatched to the fire near the corner of Stolberg Road and 21st Street, between Tallman and Round lakes. The fire burned between three to four acres and destroyed a camper, damaging several others, according to Fountain Area Fire Chief Roger Berndt.

Fountain Area Fire Department was initially dispatched about 5 p.m. to the 2400 block of 21st Street for a report of a brush fire. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered several campers on fire near the residence. Branch Township Fire Department was first called to assist, followed by Custer Fire Department, Scottville Fire Department, and Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, along with the U.S. Forest Service. Riverton Township Fire Department was placed on stand-by at the Scottville Fire Department station to cover for the other departments.

The Fountain Area Fire Department Auxiliary and Mason County Sheriff’s Office were also on scene.

Chief Berndt said the fire started by the home occupant burning leaves, though the Michigan Department of Natural Resources had issued a ban on the burning of debris. The 24-year-old woman who was injured was transported to Munson Health Manistee Hospital by ambulance. Sheriff’s deputies on scene said she had burns to her extremities; dispatch information had also indicated that she had suffered from smoke inhalation.

Berndt said it was likely the home occupant would be receiving a citation for burning in violation of the DNR ban.

Fire units were clear of the scene at 8:20 p.m.
