WSCC ranks No. 2 among Michigan practical nursing programs.

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College has been recognized as the number two-ranked licensed practical nursing (LPN) program in Michigan by the annual PracticalNursing.org state LPN program rankings.

Rankings were based on NCLEX-PN exam passing rates. The exam is used by state boards of nursing around the country for testing proficiency and granting licensure.

WSCC had an overall score of 98.08, just behind Muskegon Community College, which had 99.64 total points. Lansing Community College was ranked third with 98.02 points.

“Student success is attributed to student and faculty dedication,” said Shelley Boes, director of nursing and allied health at WSCC. “Naturally, we are very proud that our students are extremely successful on passing their NCLEX-PN, with 100 percent first-time pass rates in all but one year in the past several years.”

After first completing WSCC’s state-approved education program that not only provides the necessary curriculum but also hands-on training for patient care, most students choose to take the NCLEX-PN, obtain their LPN license, and work as an LPN for a period of time, before moving on to complete the associate degree in nursing (ADN) program. 

WSCC’s LPN program can usually be completed in one to two years, then the graduate must register and pass the NCLEX-PN to become licensed in the state. The program has around 30 graduates per year.
