LUDINGTON — Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole is asking shoppers to be aware of their surroundings in response to recent social media postings about alleged suspicious activity. “During the past two weeks the Mason County Sheriff’s Office responded to calls reporting suspicious activity at our local Walmart in Pere Marquette Township,” the sheriff said. “The reports have centered around unknown males approaching young children or young adults. Up to this point we have not been able to identify any persons of interest by name nor do we actually have a crime that’s been committed (that’s been reported). This doesn’t mean there isn’t a potentiality for a crime or those subjects being called on don’t have ill intentions.

Please know that local law enforcement is communicating and sharing information.

“In light of the recent concerns, I walked around several shops and stores. It absolutely amazed me how many folks pay no attention to those around them.”

Sheriff Cole said if someone is concerned with possible suspicious activity they should not hesitate to immediately call 911 and also inform store personnel as well.

““I realize social media is a great way to get alerts out to the public in quick order but also call the authorities as soon as possible.:

He offered the following tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings all the time.
  • Pay attention to those around you.
  • Park in well lit areas.
  • Pay attention to vehicles parked around you. Are they occupied?
  • Park your vehicle facing out-so you don’t have to back out of a parking space.
  • Have your vehicles keys in hand.
  • Pay attention to your children 100% of the time-don’t let them wander.
  • Take a friend with you when shopping.
  • Put your phone down.
  • Don’t be afraid to engage in casual conversation, but know when it’s time to move on.
  • If you see something, say something.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately to 911!
