SCOTTVILLE — The Scottville Clown Band Shell Summer Music Series, normally held on Tuesdays, will hold a special Independence Week performance on Wednesday, July 5, featuring Edgar Struble and Friends.

“It’s been a number of years since I’ve played my hometown and I’m really looking forward to a fun night for all,” Edgar said.

“I’ll have a good-sized band for this performance – a total of 10 musicians from this area and beyond. We’ll be playing some of the light jazz and pop I’ve written over the years and some cover tunes as well. I like to tell folks that they don’t need a Ph.D to enjoy this music – It’s all very accessible.”

Edgar Struble was born and raised in Scottville and graduated from Mason County Central High School and Michigan State University. From 1976 to 1991, he toured the world as the musical director for performing artist Kenny Rogers, serving as conductor, arranger, instrumentalist and vocalist.

In 1991 marriage and family convinced Edgar to leave the road. He settled in Nashville, from where he commuted to Los Angeles and other cities where his talents were needed. In Music City he was much in demand as evidenced by some of his more visible assignments: Musical Director for the Nashville Network’s series, “The Oak Ridge Boys Live From Las Vegas,” Musical Director for “Company’s Comin’,” another TNN special starring Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, and saluting the legendary Porter Wagoner. He also served as Musical Director for TNN’s flagship program, “Prime Time Country,” a five day a week effort in which he also appeared as an on-camera personality and a featured performer.

In 1999 Edgar and his family moved to Los Angeles where he began a regular gig for Dick Clark Productions, writing and arrangements for many music award specials. Edgar’s career also expanded into producing films, many that have been created locally in Mason and Manistee counties.

Besides, Los Angeles, Edgar also resides in Mason County at his seasonal home in Ludington.

Wednesday’s 7 p.m. performance will include band members Kevin DePree (drums), Ken Jury (bass), Phil Tarczon (guitar), Dan Jacobs (trumpet), Glen Floering (trumpet), Chris Bickley (sax) Ron Johnson (sax), Ron Marek (sax), Tom Sheppardson (trombone).

The Scottville Clown Band Shell is owned and operated jointly by the Scottville Optimist Club and the Scottville Clown Band. This season’s major sponsors include West Shore Bank, Indian Summer Co-Op, Hardman Construction, Smith & Eddy Insurance, Mason County Press, Mason County Central Education Foundation, Turf Care/Mole Man, and Safety Decals.
