LUDINGTON — The Ludington Police Department has identified the man who died Wednesday following a fall at the Ludington Water Treatment Plant as Kevin Anthony Martinez, 20, of Grand Rapids. Martinez died at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids after he was flown there from Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital via helicopter.

In a previous press release, City Manager John Shay stated that Martinez, who was an employee of one of the contractors working on the plant’s repairs and upgrades, fell through a skylight onto an empty concrete clarifier, a distance of about 30 feet. He was initially transported by Life EMS ambulance to Ludington hospital and then airlifted by AeroMed to Grand Rapids where he was pronounced dead.

Shay said the construction project’s general contract, Davis Construction of Lansing, has informed the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration about the incident, which will be sending investigators to the plant Thursday morning.

An autopsy is scheduled for today by the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The plant is located on North Lakeshore Drive, just north of Stearns Park.

Ludington Police Department, Ludington Fire Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, and Life EMS responded to the scene.
