LUDINGTON — A Pere Marquette Township woman who stole her grandmother’s checks was sentenced to serve four months up front of an 11-month discretionary jail term Tuesday, April 11, in 51st Circuit Court for one count of uttering and publishing.

Danielle Renae Perow, 29, of 1141 Daisy Lane, Lot 13, originally faced three counts of uttering and publishing, which is a 14-year felony, and three counts of identity theft, which is a five-year felony, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola. The other five counts were dismissed in a plea agreement when she pleaded guilty to the one count.

“I was given a check and I used it at the store, and the check was stolen,” Perow testified at an earlier hearing.

The incident occurred at Walmart in Pere Marquette Township last October, the prosecutor said.

Perow was ordered to pay fines and costs as well as restitution of $344.53 that is joint and several with a co-defendant.

Perow was on a delayed sentence for a Muskegon County drug case at the time of the offense, said Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola. “She has a long history of drug abuse.”

“She stole the money to support her drug habit,” Spaniola said. “It certainly bothers me that you’re taking advantage of your elderly grandmother to feed your habit.”

Judge Susan K. Sniegowski also ordered 18 months probation. Perow will undergo outpatient treatment if she is referred by her probation agent, the judge said. She received credit for 86 days served in jail.

“I hope you get your life back on track,” Sniegowski said.
