AMBER TOWNSHIP — An agricultural burn in an open field in the 700 block of West First Street lost control Friday afternoon, causing embers of the fire to ignite a neighbor’s woods, about quarter mile to the southeast. According to the National Weather Service, wind speeds were at 18 mph out of the north during the time of the fire. The fire in the woods occurred southeast of the home at 777 W. First Street; the fire was directly north of the home. Thick white smoke covered the area of the neighbor’s home.

Scottville Fire Department was initially called to the fire, which was dispatched as a grass fire near the origin of the fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the fire had jumped several hundred yards. At that time, Custer and Riverton fire departments were called to assist. Firefighters extinguished the original burn pile and also the additional fires.

The landowner was cited by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for allowing a fire to get out of control.

Mason County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police were also on the scene.
