VICTORY TOWNSHIP — A group of students from West Shore Community College recently hosted the 2016 Trends in Occupational Studies Conference, held at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center in Detroit.

The students are active members of the college’s Future Business Leaders (FBL) club, a registered student organization currently consisting of seven students and advised by Dr. Amy Wojciechowski, WSCC Business Division chair.

The students who attended were Jarret Deisch, Garrett Friedley, Dawn Carrier, Maxwell Purvis, Katherine Thompson, Katelyn Pruyne, and Serena Kuhn.

The Trends in Occupational Studies conference serves as a tool for community college professionals who are novices or experienced in teaching/learning modalities. Also in attendance are administrators who work with community partners in Career and Technical Education (CTE). Participants learn and share about strategic CTE programs that promote success for current and future students.

The conference is held each fall and provides technical and content assistance to CTE faculty, staff, and administrators through workshops, meetings, round table discussions, general sessions and networking opportunities.

During the conference, the students worked closely with Ferris State University’s Conference and Professional Services staff as they hosted the conference’s various presenters. This primarily included establishing a connection with each presenter, greeting attendees, introducing presenters, as well as distributing and collecting surveys.

According to Dawn Carrier, a WSCC student and member of the FBL club, the opportunity to work with faculty and administration from WSCC as well as other colleges across the state was an incredible experience.

The students applied what they learned in the classroom to a real world environment. Those skills included effective communication, customer service, networking, leadership, and collaboration.
