LOGAN TOWNSHIP — A deer hunter, who is a 24-year-old Mason County man, was reportedly assaulted in the woods by two other hunters on the opening day of firearm deer season Tuesday, Nov. 15, 10 a.m. The men, described as white men in their 20s, stole the hunter’s deer, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. See related story here

The assault and theft occurred on state land in Section 21 of Logan Township, Cole said. The hunter heard a gunshot just prior to firing his gun at a buck that ran by. When he went to the kill site, he was approached by the two hunters who “went to lay claim to the deer,” Cole said. A verbal argument ensued over who had ownership of the deer. “Obscenities were exchanged,” he said.

The victim suffered “an obvious injury to his face” from apparently being punched, the sheriff said. The two men then took the deer, which is either a six- or seven-point buck. It is believed all three hunters were armed at the time of the assault.

“It’s a shame,” Cole said. “Hunters have a gentlemen’s agreement.”

The case remains under investigation.
