RIVERTON TOWNSHIP — A 37-year-old Custer man was seriously injured following a single vehicle crash Sunday on Chauvez Road. The man was traveling east in a Ford Escort station wagon, according to Mason County sheriff deputies on scene. The vehicle left the roadway as it entered the curves just before Swan Creek. Riverton Township Fire Chief said the vehicle was frosted over when emergency crews arrived, indicating that the crash may have occurred a few hours before the car was discovered by a passerby. Emergency personnel were dispatched about 7:20 a.m.

The vehicle was about 30 feet off the roadway and had struck several trees. The man was trapped in the vehicle and rescue units from Custer and Ludington fire departments were called to extricate him. Cooper said EMS had inquired about calling Aeromed helicopter from Grand Rapids but the service was unable to fly due to heavy fog. The man was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.

Responding to the scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Riverton Township Fire Department, Custer Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, and Life EMS.

The crash remains under investigation.
