VICTORY TOWNSHIP — In celebration of the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, West Shore Community College has organized a variety of activities on Wednesday, Sept. 14, to commemorate the vote taken on Sept. 17, 1787, by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention to approve the adoption of the United States Constitution.

The WSCC Student Senate is sponsoring a Constitution Day trivia contest to be staged in the atrium of the Schoenherr Campus Center from noon to 2 p.m. There will be prizes for those who form a team.

The Student Senate also will host a voter registration table. Those who are not registered to vote can pick up and complete a Michigan Voter Registration Application to ensure they will be eligible to vote in the general election this November.

A display of books about the Constitution and biographies for many of the delegates who attended the Constitutional Convention has been assembled at the William M. Anderson Library.

Faculty members are being encouraged to read and discuss selections from the Constitution with their classes and have been provided a list of video and curricular resources to stimulate discussion.

“The Constitution is the most significant guarantee of our freedoms,” said Professor of History and Political Science Mike Nagle, who organizes the annual event at WSCC. “We can appreciate our freedom and respect our system of government by learning more about its importance on this special day.”

“We hope everyone takes a moment to read this important document. Constitution Day provides the opportunity for all of us to give extra thought and focus to the Constitution and how it enriches our lives and citizenship.”

Free pocket copies of the Constitution, courtesy of U.S. Congressman Bill Huizinga and U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, will be available from the college’s Beans and Bread Café, library, and bookstore.
