LUDINGTON — Dr. Nizar Umran has reached a milestone that few have achieved in the Ludington area—40 years in practice in the same community and the same hospital.

The 40th anniversary of the founding of the surgeon’s practice occurred Sunday, July 17.  His long service was recognized by colleagues at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital early Monday morning, before he went to the operating room to begin his 41st year. The celebration of his 40 years of service will include a public reception at a date to be announced later.

Internist Dr. Mary O’Callaghan, division chief for Spectrum Health Medical Group in the Northwest Region, said, “Dr. Umran has a distinguished career of both medical care and community service. He and his wife, Zelal, can truly be described as pillars of our community.”

“We in the medical community respect Nizar’s long history of medical care to his many patients throughout the region,” said fellow surgeon Dr. Bret Autrey. “He has been a great friend and mentor to me and many other physicians as we started practice.

Added Dr. O’Callaghan, “His colleagues and his community are fortunate that he chose to devote his career and medical skill to Ludington and the surrounding communities.”

Dr. Umran, came to Norfolk, Virginia, for his internship upon medical school graduation in 1969. He then served residencies in Baltimore and Detroit. He was a chief general surgery resident at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and earned a fellowship in cardiovascular surgery at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

He opened his practice in Ludington in 1976, which he re-named Surgical Associates of Ludington in 1989. The office he shares with Dr. Autrey is located in the medical office building at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital, where he has been on the medical staff throughout his long tenure as one of the area’s principal surgeons. After the former Memorial Medical Center joined Spectrum Health, Dr. Umran joined the Spectrum Health Medical Group and the office became Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital General Surgery.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Michigan Medical Society and the American Medical Association.

Zelal Umran has long been a leading volunteer at the hospital. Both have been active in such fundraising events as the annual Benefit Ball for the hospital foundation and a variety of community benefit activities. Mrs. Umran recently hosted at her home the construction of an array of highly detailed “old-world” Santas that were auctioned off last week to raise money for the hospital’s Family Birthing Center.
