Mildred Masten

Mildred Jean (Midge) Masten, 89, of Carr Settlement passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Autumn Winds AFC home in Amber Township after a battle with congestive heart failure.

Midge was born on January 21, 1927 in Fountain to William and Gertrude (Crydeman) Goff. She graduated from Scottville High School in 1945 and started her life long work ethic. Midge worked for many local companies, some including Star Watch Case, Strait Steal and Wire, Ferrells Restaurant, The Rendezvous Tavern, and Ruby Creek Tavern. She also worked cleaning many cabins and homes for neighbors in Carr Settlement.

Midge married Darrell L. Masten on August 4, 1967 and moved to Carr Settlement to start their life together working on the farm and enjoying 48 years of marriage. Her farm days were filled with rounding up escaped cows through the corn fields, managing her pickle patch, canning pickles and tomatoes from the garden, helping to make hay, driving tractor, and assisting Darrell in everyday farm tasks.

Midge had a full life filled with much happiness and rewards, one of which was being chosen Carr Settlement’s Mother of the Year on May 10, 2013. She was honored and surprised to receive that title. She was an avid bowler on local leagues in Mason County and enjoyed playing cards, hosting get-togethers with all her family and friends, and gardening in her flower garden. Midge had a green thumb when it came to growing plants and flowers. She loved her birds and fed them all throughout the entire year. She also loved her kitties Kay Kay and Snowball, which have missed her throughout her time away from home.

She was preceded in death by her husband Darrell; her two children Walter and Janet Beyer; her father and mother, William and Gertrude Goff; brothers Earl, Emerson, Carl and Reo Goff; sisters Ada Williams and Lillian Coker.

Midge is survived by and will be sadly missed by her two daughters Darlene (Dave) Hunter of Harbor Beach and Judy (Devon) Owen of Ludington; her grandchildren Paul (Debbie) Hunter of Harbor Beach, Brian Hunter of Howell, Devon Owen Jr. of Canton and Cassondra Owen of Ferndale; her great-grandchildren Jacob, Caleb and Tara Hunter, all of Harbor Beach.

Midge will also be sadly missed by her friends who helped to take such good care of her after Darrell passed away in 2014: Laura McCumber, Perry and Jeannie Tyndall, Ruth Ann (Johnston) McLellen, Midge’s nephew Dave (Cindy) Coker and her niece Karen Coker. Their kindness and unwavering help enabled her to live at her home until becoming ill earlier this year.

The last two months Midge lived at Autumn Winds AFC home where she made many friends with the residents and adored the staff as they made her feel welcome, appreciated and cared for.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Ludington.
