SHERMAN TWP. — A brush fire that got out of control burned down an abandoned house Sunday afternoon. Jim Jackoviak Jr. said he was burning brush on his property on Custer Road, north of Sugar Grove, when the winds changed and caught the old house on fire. The house is part of the 80-acres of land Jackoviak and his wife, Jan, own in Section 27 of Sherman Township. Smoke from the fire could be scene from Scottville.

Initially Fountain Area Fire Department was called for what Mason-Oceana 911 was dispatching as a “small out building” on fire. While en-route, Fountain requested the assistance of Custer Twp. Fire Dept. The building was fully engulfed when the first fire unit checked in on scene. Scottville Fire Dept. was later called for personnel and its water tanker truck. Fountain Area Fire Dept. Auxiliary and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers, were also on scene.
