blurrysquatNORTON SHORES – Cecilia Ruiz, 17, of Ludington competed in the regional powerlifting competition held at Mona Shores High School over the weekend of Feb. 28-March 1.

Though the competition was her first as a powerlifter, she earned a silver medal in her respective weight class. Cecilia was able to deadlift 245 pounds, bench press 90 pounds and back squat 225 pounds for a new personal best.

“Cecilia’s performance at the regional competition comes at no surprise,” her coach Sarah Smiddy of Ludington CrossFit said.

“Her determination, work ethic, willingness to learn has turned her into a ‘Wonder Woman’ inside the gym. She is only getting started and I cannot wait to see what the future holds.”

Cecilia trains out of Ludington CrossFit and is a member of the Ludington Barbell Club, which focuses on preparing athletes for competition. Cecilia will compete at the state meet at Montrose High School.
