WSCC to celebrate community college week.

VICTORY TWP. – The community is invited to several free events at West Shore Community College in celebration of Michigan Community College Week, Sept. 15 – 22.

Community College Week, which will take place across the state at all of Michigan’s 28 community colleges, is intended to increase the visibility and recognize the impact these colleges have on the lives of students, alumni, and the communities they serve.

“We have organized events for students and the public to reflect the College’s mission and commitment to community service and on helping students succeed both academically and professionally,” said Thom Hawley, director of college relations.

On Sept. 15, sidewalk artists in the community are invited to create chalk artwork on sidewalks surrounding the Schoenherr Campus Center.

“Pavement Picasso,” sponsored by the Student Senate and held from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., is a free event and sidewalk chalk will be provided. Individuals as well as teams are encouraged to participate. Contestants are asked to contact the Student Senate for space assignments and prizes will be awarded.

On Sept. 16, the Beans & Bread Café will be offering $.25 off on a hot or cold beverage when purchased in a WSCC tumbler and the Bookstore encourages students to take a “selfie” in the College’s 2014 fall apparel and receive 20% off a new apparel purchase.

In celebration of the 226th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, a variety of activities on Sept. 17 will commemorate the vote taken on Sept. 17, 1787, by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention to approve the adoption of the United States Constitution.

The college’s faculty, along with the Student Senate, have organized a constitution trivia contest from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and another at 7 p.m. in the atrium of the Schoenherr Campus Center. Free pocket copies of the Constitution, courtesy of Congressman Huizenga, will be available from the Beans and Bread Café, library, and college bookstore.

A series of videos will also be shown on television monitors throughout the campus and the William M. Anderson Library has assembled a display of books about the Constitution and biographies for many of the delegates who attended the Constitutional Convention. The Beans and Bread Café will offer lunch specials based on an historical theme.

Also on Sept. 17, the community is invited to attend “Reconnect with the Rec.” Throughout the day, free tours and use of the Recreation Center will be offered and the event will also provide an opportunity to view the renovated facilities and learn more about the services provided by the staff.

In conjunction with the week-long celebration, the Rec Center staff will offer those who are 60 or older and living within the WSCC district an opportunity to purchase, until Sept. 30, the “Forever Senior II” one-year membership for $156.

To view the latest technology used in classes offered by the College, the Business Opportunity Center will sponsor a demonstration highlighting robotics growing importance in a wide variety of application areas. The demonstration will take place in the Technical Center atrium on Sept. 18, from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.

The Manierre Dawson Gallery will open a new exhibition from the Michigan State University Museum, on Sept. 22, consisting of photographic interpretive banners and a reproduction of an Idlewild history quilt by Michigan quilter Deonna Todd Greed.

In conjunction with the gallery opening, Ron Stephens, the author of two books about the history of Idlewild, will be speaking at 12:30 p.m. in the Center Stage Theater and at 7 p.m. in room 364 of the Arts & Sciences Center.  There will be a reception and book signing at 2 p.m.

During the entire week, the College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is encouraging students to complete their degrees and certificates by hosting “Commit to Complete” signing events in the Campus Center.

Students will be asked to sign a mass pledge to complete their associate degrees or certificates before leaving community college for transfer or to enter the job market.
