Police warn of mail scam

August 25, 2014

SCOTTVILLE — The Scottville Police Department is warning of a mail scam that was received by a city resident. On Aug. 23, the resident received a package marked priority mail from the U.S. Postal Service. Enclosed in the envelope was a communication from a company called Expert Audit. The communication stated that Expert Audit is working with Wal-Mart Corporation. The package also included a check for $1,735.

“Law enforcement officers in the City of Scottville determined that the letter was a fraudulent scam and the check was counterfeit,” Chief Donald Riley said.

Riley said that anyone who receives such a package should not deposit the check nor should they follow the instructions in the package.
