College for Kids allows kids to discover new talents, expand knowledge

VICTORY TWP. — West Shore Community College will be hosting College for Kids 2013, July 28 – August 1.

The five-day College for Kids is a hands-on opportunity to explore higher education through arts, sciences, communications and recreation in a day-camp atmosphere on the college campus and features 25 action-packed learning adventures designed for motivated learners grades 4 – 8.

“Through College for Kids, students can discover new talents, expand their knowledge, and enjoy hands-on learning under the guidance of experienced educators,” says College for Kids Coordinator Christy Christmas.

Some of the courses and activities include electronics, digital photography, arts, creative writing, wilderness survival, building a business, science courses, acting, nutritional cooking, robotics, geocaching, a variety of recreational activities, and more.

Full-day, week-long participants receive two, three-hour courses, and a College for Kids t-shirt for $130.  Half-day week-long participants receive one, three- hour course, and a t-shirt for $75.  Some scholarships are available by contacting the coordinator.

Students should bring a sack lunch or may purchase, in advance, lunch at the Beans & Bread café from a pre-established menu. To view the menu, visit the college web site and click on College for Kids.

To accommodate the schedule of working parents, students may be dropped off at the Recreation Center at 8:30 a.m. and should be picked up at the same location no later than 4 p.m.

Registration for College for Kids is underway through July 15.  Early registration is suggested as most courses are limited to 15 participants.
