Scottville to begin refuse bag policy in March

January 20, 2014

SCOTTVILLE — Beginning March 11, Scottville residents will need to purchase special bags in order to use the city’s refuse system. In order to compensate for a negative balance in the refuse budget, the city commission recently approved the new procedure.

Bags can be purchased at City Hall or Wesco. The price will be $6 for a package of 13 gallon bags and $12 for a package of 30 gallon bags. The bags can be bought individually at city hall, as well.

City Manager Amy Williams said that once March 11 arrives, the waste hauler will be instructed to pick up trash in the designated city bags. The bags will either be green or blue and will have “Scottville” printed on them.

The city had a bag purchase policy from the early 1990s until about five years ago.

“It will likely take a couple weeks for people to get back into the habit of using the bags,” Williams said to the city commission in a pre-meeting memo. “Recycling will still remain the same and we will have the spring and fall clean-ups along with curbside yard waste pick-up.
