Franz supports veteran designation on licenses

LANSING — Military veterans could have their Michigan driver’s license reflect their service to their country through legislation now being considered by Gov. Rick Snyder, state Rep. Ray Franz said today.

House Bill 4037 and Senate Bill 219, measures to place a special ‘veteran’ designation on eligible driver’s licenses and state identification cards, were approved by the state Senate this week and now go before the governor.

“Having the state’s official proof of military service right at your fingertips will make it easier for veterans to access programs and other benefits they have earned,” said Franz, R-Onekama. “I applaud the fast and overwhelming support this idea has had to get it to the governor’s desk in such a timely manner.”

Michigan would be the 28th state to place a “veteran” designation on state-issued IDs and driver’s licenses.

Additionally, the Secretary of State’s office will share application information with the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs in an effort to ensure veterans are receiving all benefits they deserve.

Both bills now head to Snyder for consideration.
