FREE SOIL — An early morning fire destroyed a house at 2759 E. Michigan St. in the village Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020. Free Soil/Meade Fire Department and Fountain Area Fire Department were initially dispatched at 4:48 a.m. and Grant Township Fire Department was dispatched at 5:52 a.m.

Free Soil/Meade Fire Chief Vince Williams said flames were coming out of the windows in the back of the house when the department arrived. Williams said the house was being rented by one person, who was not home at the time of the fire. He said the fire began in a bedroom located in the back of the house, which is part of the original portion of the home. Williams declared the house a total loss.

Williams said the house had insurance but contents were no insured. Williams said he has called the Michigan State Police fire marshal.

Also assisting on scene were Custer Fire Department, Scottville Fire Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, and Fountain Fire Department Auxiliary.

Firefighters remained on scene past 10 a.m.
