WEARE TOWNSHIP — A 5-month-old white Maltese female dog is missing following a crash Thursday, Jan. 9, on US 31 north of Hammett Road near Pentwater.

The small dog, which weighs 5 pounds or less, may have been ejected from the vehicle, said Oceana County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Shane Hasty.

The sheriff’s office is asking the public to be on the look out for the little dog, which is wearing a collar. Her name is Noki. She is not microchipped, Hasty said.

A California man was transported by Life EMS to Mercy Health Partners Hackley Campus in Muskegon following the single-vehicle crash on southbound US 31.

He was driving a white SUV and lost control on “very icy roads” caused by freezing rain, Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast said.

The vehicle struck a large pine tree in the median, which snapped in half.

Hart Area Fire Department Jaws of Life cut into the vehicle in an attempt to locate the missing dog, Mast said.

If you have information as to the dog’s whereabouts, contact the sheriff’s office at 231-873-2121 or Mason/Oceana Central Dispatch at (231) 869-5858.
