VanderWall, rocker Ted Nugent testify against deer baiting ban.

LANSING — Sen. Curt VanderWall, R-Ludington, along with musician and hunting enthusiast Ted Nugent and Rep. Michele Hoitenga, R-Manton, testified on Tuesday before the House Government Operations Committee on House Bill 4687, Hoitenga’s legislation that would enhance hunting activities in the state.

VanderWall introduced the same measure, Senate Bill 37, in the Senate. The legislation would reverse the Natural Resources Commission ban on baiting and feeding deer in the entire Lower Peninsula.

Nugent questioned the scientific reasoning behind the bans, noting that he’s spent every hunting season watching deer swap spit, eat from the same apples and branches and otherwise partake in the same behaviors feeding and baiting encourage.

“I don’t have a lab coat and I’ve never spent a time in the laboratory,” he told lawmakers. “What I have observed and what I have witnessed every year of my life is totally opposite of what the epidemiologists have forced us to adopt.”
