GRAND RAPIDS — James Russell Davidson, 50, died on Sept. 11, 2019 as a result of injuries sustained in a single vehicle rollover crash on Sept. 2, 2019 in Sheridan Township. Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole said the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office notified the Mason County Sheriff’s Office of Davidson’s death.

On Sept. 2, Davidson was traveling northbound on Benson Road, north of Borowski Road, when the 1998 GMC extended cab pickup apparently crossed the centerline and left the roadway, traveled several hundred feet, rolled over and struck a utility pole before ending up back in the roadway on its side.

Emergency personnel were dispatched at 10:46 p.m.

Davidson was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed with rescue equipment used by Fountain Area Fire Department. He was then transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital and then flown by helicopter to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The crash was unwitnessed and the exact time of the crash is unknown.  Speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crash.

Emergency crews responding included Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Fountain Area Fire Department, and Life EMS.
