SCOTTVILLE — As Mason County Central High School students return to school on Tuesday, Sept. 3, they will find a freshly restored gymnasium floor. This is the first time the floor has been re-sanded and re-painted since it was built in 2007, said Athletic Director Tim Genson. A part of the project was paid for through a donation by Smith & Eddy Insurance, based in Scottville. On Friday, the MCC alumni who work for Smith & Eddy gathered at the gym to pose for a photograph.

“Smith & Eddy has been in Scottville since 1902 and we are honored that nine out of our 20 employees, 45%, are graduates of MCC,” said President Scott Smith. “We enjoy partnering with all the local schools in our area and helping MCC re-finish its gym floor was a natural fit. We believe that investing in our local schools means that we are investing in future, productive citizens our communities.”

Genson said a wooden gym floor is supposed to be re-finished every 10 to 12 years. He said the average floor should make it through four re-finishes before the wood needs to be replaced.

“We’re pretty proud of how well we take care of our gym floors,” Genson said. “A.O. Carlson Gymnasium was built in 1958 and still has its original floor. We are hoping that we can get that type of longevity out of this gym’s floor as well.”

Spartan fans will find the floor has a new paint job that enhances the wood work and school pride as well.
