LUDINGTON — During its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, Aug. 13, the Mason County Board of Commissioners voted down a request by West Shore Community College to hire a full-time deputy to patrol the college’s campus. Commissioners Lew Squires and Gary Castonia voting in favor of it.

WSCC President Scott Ward made the request to Sheriff Kim Cole asking for a deputy to be posted to the college during the college’s fall and winter semesters each year. Cole endorsed the request. If approved, WSCC would have covered 100% of the deputy’s wages between Sept. 1 through April 30. In addition, the college would have paid 66.67% of the vehicle and equipment expense along with other expenses. The deputy would have been under the supervision of the sheriff.
