GRAND HAVEN TWP. (Ottawa County) — A Scottville man was involved in a two vehicle crash on US 31 Thursday, July 11, that resulted in the death of a 59-year-old Spring Lake woman.

The Grand Haven Tribune reported that John William Olson, 58, of Scottville, was driving a semi-truck was traveling through the intersection on north on US 31 and Comstock Street (Meijer gas station) about 3:15 p.m. when a 2004 Infinity SUV attempted to make an eastbound turn onto Comstock from southbound US 31.

Witness information and evidence from the scene indicated that the SUV had a blinking yellow (yield) turn signal when it traveled into the path of the semi, which was northbound and had the right of way (green traffic signal) at the intersection, said Sgt. The SUV rolled over after the impact and the driver was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ottawa County medical examiner. Police said they were unsure if she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

Olson was not injured in the crash and was wearing a seat belt, according to Ruster. He was driving a truck owned by Great Lakes Trucking of Ludington.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department. Assisting at the scene were officers from the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, Grand Haven Township firefighters and the Michigan State Police Accident Reconstruction Team.
