Spartan River Races to benefit MCC High School library.

SCOTTVILLE — One of the stand-out events of the Scottville 10 & 31 Celebration is the Spartan River Races being held Saturday, July 13 on the Pere Marquette River. The racing events are being organized by the Mason County Central Education Foundation with proceeds benefiting updates at the MCC High School library.

The event includes three events on the Pere Marquette River: a 12 mile paddle from Scottville to Ludington; a 4.7 mile paddle from Custer to Scottville; and a triathlon, which includes a 12 mile bike race, 4.7 mile run and 4.7 mile paddle. Kayaks or canoes can be used.

The high school library has had little updates for over 40 years. The teachers and students desire a more appealing, comfortable setting for reading and studying, said Katie Provenzano, director of development and marketing for the foundation.

The education foundation, school district, and Mason County District Library worked with Megan Blackmer from Interphase Interiors to establish a budget for the update.

“The long-term goal for the space is a more user-friendly design, updated furniture, and new resources,” Provenzano said. “Earlier this year, MCCEF donated $1,250 and the Scottville Optimist Club donated $1,000 for new novels. As soon as these books arrived, students were checking them out of the library.”

To date in 2019, MCCEF has provided over $20,000 to MCC Schools with the help of donors. MCCEF purchased growing towers for the biology departments in the middle school and the high school, Clever Touch boards for the elementary schools, updated security cameras for all the schools, awarded scholarships, and assisted with the robotics team travel and lodging expenses for its state competition.
