Woman charged with killing Pentwater construction worker absent from hearing.

MANISTEE — The woman accused of causing a fatal crash in a construction zone last year in Bear Lake was due in 85th District Court today but did not appear with her attorney, according to UpNorthLive.com (7&4 News). Charlene Myers, 67, of Bear Lake, is being charged with two misdemeanors – moving violation causing death and moving violation causing serious impairment of a body function.

While she was not in the courtroom, 7&4 News reports that the members of the victims’ families did attend.

The family members said they are frustrated with the lack of information they’ve been getting from the prosecuting attorney and with how long it has taken for any charges to be filed against Myers.
Investigators said Myers was speeding when she was in the construction zone and hit the workers.

In September, 2018, Myers was driving on US 31 in the Village of Bear Lake when she allegedly entered into a construction zone and struck two workers with her 2013 Ford Taurus. Andre Alvesteffer, 20, of Pentwater was pronounced dead at the scene. Damon Williams, 23, of Ludington was seriously injured. Both Alvesteffer and Williamson were graduates of Mason County Central High School.

She faces up to one year in jail and/or a $2,000 fine for the charge of moving violation causing death and up to 93 days in jail and/or a $500 fine for the moving violation causing serious impairment charge.

During Wednesday hearing Myers’ attorney asked for more time to go over the case before the court case moves forward.
