1 detained, 2 shot in Free Soil Township incident.

FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — One person is in custody following a double shooting at a residence Tuesday morning on US 31 between Hoague and Koenig roads. Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole said the incident took place shortly before 7 a.m. Two adults were shot in the incident and an adult male has been detained, Cole said. Two children were also at the residence at the time of the shooting but were not injured, Cole said, adding that there was no danger to the public. 

US 31 in that area was closed.

Cole said detectives and deputies will remain on the scene investigating. A press conference is planned at the sheriff’s office later this morning and more details will be released.

Responding to the scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Manistee County Sheriff’s Office, Grant Township Fire Department, Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians tribal police, and U.S. Forest Service law enforcement.

Area schools were placed in a “soft” lockdown during the early portion of the incident.
