Paws With A Cause seeking foster puppy raisers in the Ludington area.

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — Paws With A Cause is looking for foster puppy raisers in the Ludington area. The national non-profit organization is headquartered in Wayland. Its mission is to enhance independence and improve the quality of life for families through custom-trained assistance dogs. Paws will hold an orientation on Monday, April 8 at 6 p.m. at West Shore Community College Recreation Center.

The organization breeds, raises and custom-trains future assistance dogs. From 8-weeks-old, the dogs are raised by dog volunteers for up to a year.

“We often get the response that people don’t want to volunteer to raise a foster puppy for PAWS because they don’t think they could ever give the dog back” said current Ludington foster puppy raiser, Eliese Tilmann. “Please do not let the fear of turn-in day keep you from experiencing all of the puppy kisses, wagging tails, and joys of raising a PAWS future assistance dog”.

Foster puppy raisers care for and teach the puppy basic commands. They attend training classes at a puppy club led by a field representative. The puppies are raised with the goal of becoming a PAWS assistance dog for a person with a disability.

A PAWS assistance dog helps a person with a disability to complete essential tasks.  By helping to open doors, pick up objects, pull a wheelchair or alert them to sounds, barriers are overcome. The assistance dog acts as a constant companion allowing them to gain confidence while bringing peace of mind to their loved ones.

As a national non-profit organization, Paws With A Cause relies upon donors who support the organization’s mission. PAWS clients pay no fee to apply for or to receive their assistance dog. To date, almost 3,000 PAWS assistance dogs have been placed nationwide since 1979.
