Mona Halladay

Obituary: Mona Halladay, 96, Ludington.

Mona Sophia Halladay, 96, died January 9, 2019 surrounded by family in her room at Ludington Woods. She was born in Ludington on April 29, 1922 to Carl and Sophia Gunberg. With the encouragement of her brother Milton, Mona graduated from Central Michigan University. It was there she first met Roy Halladay. In spite of the distance of war, sickness and several moves, Mona and Roy would have three children and spend 57 years married before Roy died in 2000.

Mona and Roy made their home in many places, including Ann Arbor, Hesperia, East Grand Rapids and Lake Bluff and Lake Forest, Ill. They returned to Ludington following Mona’s retirement from her long teaching career.

Mona never met a stranger and was often teased by her family for finding ways to connect with nearly anyone she met. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge. She loved to travel and was an avid reader. She dedicated thousands of hours of volunteering with the United Methodist Church, including establishing the rag rug-making program.

Nothing was more important to Mona than her family and she adored being a grandmother to her seven grandchildren: Jessie (Andrew), Kate (Michael), Sara, Rachel (Rob), Jacob, Corrie and Alexandra. She was thrilled to have lived long enough to have eight great-grandchildren come into her life.

She is survived and remembered by all those grands and greats, as well her son, Kent and daughter, Janet. She is also survived by three daughters-in-law, Sandy, Pam and Karen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sophia and Carl; her beloved brother, Milton; the love-of-her-life, Roy; and her oldest son, Douglas.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
