Driver who died in Free Soil Road crash identified. 

FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of the driver who died in a single vehicle crash on Free Soil Road Tuesday afternoon. Joey Dean Vanderpool, 63, of Sheridan Township, was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle he was driving left the roadway and collided head-on with a tree.

The crash occurred about 3:50 p.m. Vanderpool was driving a 1992 Toyota Camry car eastbound on Free Soil Road, west of Reek Road. According to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole, the vehicle lost control at a high speed, ran off the south side of the road and struck a tree. Vanderpool was wearing his seatbelt and was trapped in the vehicle. First responders removed him from the vehicle.

Responding to the scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Free Soil/Meade Fire Department, Grant Township Fire Department, Mason County Medical Examiner, and Life EMS.

The crash remains under investigation pending a toxicology results.
