PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — Historic White Pine Village received an addition to its railroad exhibit today, a log car donated by the Coopersville & Marne Railroad. In November 2017, the Mason County Historical Society acquired a locomotive and tender from the Coopersville & Marne Railroad, an Ottawa County non-profit organization. After spending the winter and spring in restoration, the items debuted this past summer. The log car arrived today with the help of West Shore Services, Inc. and Towns Bros., along with volunteers from the historical society and Western Michigan Old Engine Club.

“It’s always been our desire to have a train here,” said John Holcomb of the historical society, who has been instrumental in overseeing the railroad exhibit project. “The Mason-Oceana Railroad ran from within a half mile from here from Buttersville Peninsula to Walkerville, hauling logs for the Butters and Peters Sawmill.”

Holcomb said plans are being made to add a passenger car to the exhibit as well.
