Scottville woman struck by truck after jumping out of vehicle.

AMBER TOWNSHIP — A 55-year-old Scottville woman was struck by a pick-up truck Monday night in the 3400 block of Johnson Road, east of Dennis Road. According to law enforcement personnel on the scene, the woman had jumped out of a parked 1996 Dodge Neon car, into the path of a 1994 Dodge Dakota pickup truck.

The Neon was being towed by a 2002 Dodge Dakota pick-up. The Neon’s wheels had apparently been frozen, and efforts were being made to unfreeze the wheels by towing the car with a strap. The two vehicles had initially been traveling eastbound. Then, the driver of the 2002 Dakota stopped and unstrapped the vehicles, and turned around, facing east in the westbound lane, beside the Neon.

The driver of the 2002 Dakota then noticed a vehicle heading east from Dennis Road on Johnson Road and attempted to signal the approaching vehicle by flashing the high beam headlights. The 50-year-old Amber Township man driving the approaching vehicle, a 1994 Dodge Dakota pickup truck, slowed down, according to law enforcement on scene, to approximately 25  or 30 mph and attempted to drive around the two vehicles on the south right-of-way/ditch. At that point, the 55-year-old occupant of the Neon, jumped out of the car, into the right-of-way/ditch, and into the path of the on-coming pickup.

The woman was transported by Life EMS ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital and then later by helicopter to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital. She had apparently suffered injuries to the head, neck, and ribs. She was initially tended to by off-duty EMS personnel who live in the area. Non of the others involved were injured. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor.

Responding to the scene were Michigan State Police, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Scottville Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, and Life EMS.
