HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — Fire destroyed a garage at 2236 N. Larchwood Rd. Sunday afternoon. According to Mason County Sheriff Sgt. John Balowski, the 68-year-old male resident said he had been welding a yard ornament in the garage, cleaned up his equipment and went into the attached house. He then smelled smoke and discovered the garage on fire.

The fire destroyed the garage, a car, and a camper, and severely damaged the house. A live electrical line, which caught a utility pole on fire, caused delays in fighting portions of the fire.

Responding to the scene were Hamlin Township Fire Dept., Pere Marquette Township Fire Dept., Ludington Fire Dept., Life EMS, and Mason County Sheriff’s Office.

Piney Ridge Road, off of M-116, was closed to traffic.
