Earth Day Celebration scheduled for Saturday.

PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — An Earth Day Celebration is being held Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Ludington, 5810 W. Bryant Road. The event is sponsored by AFFEW (A Few Friends of the Environment of the World).

Topics and speakers include:

  • Biology and Ecology of the White Tailed Deer, Randy Baker
  • Alternative Energy, Emil Ureel
  • Biodiversity in Food, Phil Howard

Workshops will include topics such as recycling, river care, landscaping, and ecosystems.

The event will also include kids activities, workshops, a family hike, wild animals, and green enterprise booths, along with raffle prizes and a silent auction.

About the speakers:

Randy Baker is an award winning naturalist who has been providing conservation and environmental educational programs for over 30 years. He has been involved in numerous scientific animal behavior projects as diverse as the Regeneration of Tails in Lizards, the Reproductive Behavior of Blanding’s Turtles, and the Impact That Malnutrition Has on the Immune System of the White Tailed Deer.

Emil Ureel grew up in Port Huron and continued his education at Calvin College where he received a degree in electrical engineering. His career spans almost 20 years with firms like Johnson Controls, Fleetwood Group and Innotec designing electronic hardware.

Phil Howard is an associate professor in Michigan State University’s Department of Community Sustainability and a member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems.
