LANSING — Teams from the West Shore Educational Service District placed high in last weekend’s Michigan ProStart Competition.

The management team placed third overall. It consists of Paige O’Brien and Otto Wrege of Ludington High School and Steven Loredo of Manistee High School. Each of the three students received nearly $25,000 in total scholarships from the following institutions: Ferris State University, $500; Louisiana Culinary Institute, $1,000; Culinary Institute of Virginia, $4,000; Culinary Institute of America, $1,000 renewable for three years ($3,000 total); Sullivan University, $6,000; New England Culinary Institute, $4,000; Kendall College, $6,000.

The judges were impressed with the “creative” concept the students proposed, according to Career and Technical Education Principal Lynda Matson.

The culinary team placed fifth out of 15 teams in the Michigan ProStart Competition held last weekend.

The judges commented on their strong communication skills, teamwork, sanitation, and plating techniques, Matson said.

Team members included Kristy Porter, Jayden Hathaway and Otto Wrege of Ludington High School and Abby Ault and Logan Reynolds of Ludington High School.
