WEARE TOWNSHIP — A 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck hit a Pentwater school bus that was transporting approximately 20 students Tuesday afternoon, March 6, on West Hammett Road west of North 72nd Avenue, according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.

No one was injured in the head-on crash, but both the bus and truck had to be towed from the scene due to the extent of damage. The pickup truck driver, who is an 18-year-old Pentwater man, was ticketed for speeding. Neither he nor his passenger, a 17-year-old Pentwater man, were injured in the crash. Both were wearing their seat belts.

The students were picked up by another school bus following the crash, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

The bus driver was a 60-year-old Hart man.

The pickup truck “was traveling west around the curve on North 72nd Avenue onto West Hammett Road,” in snowy conditions, the report narrative states. The driver then “lost control of his vehicle, crossing the center line, and striking (the bus) head-on.”

The 18-year-old driver was cited for “violation of basic speed – too fast for conditions.”
