Ludington man arrested on assault, kidnapping charges in Ottawa County.

OTTAWA COUNTY — A 29-year-old Ludington man was arrested Jan. 11 by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office on several charges. Jason Matthew Kapala was charged with kidnapping/domestic assault- unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, felonious assault, and habitual offender, fourth offense. The alleged incident took place on Jan. 4 in Holland Township.

Kapala was arraigned in 58th District Court in Holland on Jan. 12. Bail was set at $500,000 and he remains lodged in the Ottawa County Fillmore Complex jail.

Unlawful imprisonment is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and/or a fine of $20,000; assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of $5,000; felonious assault is punishable by up to four years in prison and/or $2,000 fine. The repeat offender offense could add a minimum of 25 years to a sentence.

While Kapala has no prior convictions in Ottawa County, he has an extensive criminal history in Mason County, including domestic violence, assaulting/resisting police, and strangulation.
