SUMMIT TOWNSHIP — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman who died Wednesday morning in a house fire at 4602 S. Pere Marquette Highway as 66-year-old Aleatha Lynn Cox.

A house fire at 4602 S. Pere Marquette Highway claimed the life of a woman early Wednesday morning, Oct. 11, 2017. The victim’s husband, Clarence , who called 911 to report the fire, was transported to the hospital by ambulance for injuries sustained during the fire.

Riverton Township Fire Department and Pere Marquette Township Fire Department were called to the scene at 2:02 a.m. Initial dispatch information stated that one female was still inside the house. Michigan State Police Trooper Matt Demny and Mason County sheriff deputies Matt Warmeskerken and Dan Dice were the first to arrive on scene and attempted to make entry, heavy smoke and heat prevented them from entering the house. Firefighters, equipped with air packs, were able to enter the home and remove the female shortly after they got on scene. Riverton Township Fire Chief Joe Cooper said the fire was contained quickly.

Life EMS ambulance transported the male to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.

Detectives from Mason County Sheriff’s Office were called to investigate the death. Cooper said initial analysis of the fire indicates that it started in the back of the house, which is also where the female was located. Cooper said he was calling a Michigan State Police fire marshal to investigate the cause of the fire.

Responding to the fire were Riverton Township Fire Department, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, and Life EMS.
